Judge Smith graduated from the University of Florida with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. She earned her J.D. from Stetson University College of Law, where she was Research Editor on the Stetson Law Journal and President of the Moot Court Board.
She began her law career with the firm of Peterson & Myers, P.A. in Lakeland, Florida, where she later became a shareholder. Over her nineteen years with the firm, she maintained a commercial litigation and appellate practice in both state and federal courts throughout Florida. While in private practice, she earned Martindale-Hubbell's highest peer review rating of AV Preeminent, awarded to only those lawyers with the highest ethical standards and professional ability.
In 2013, Judge Smith was appointed to the circuit bench of the Tenth Judicial Circuit, where she served for five years in the civil, family, and felony divisions. She served as the Administrative Judge for the Civil Division and as the Second District Court of Appeal Representative for the Florida Conference of Circuit Judges. She was retained by election in 2014. Judge Smith served on the advisory board of the Academy of Legal Studies at George Jenkins High School. She was also a member of the Lakeland Bar Association, Polk Association of Women Lawyers, and the Willson American Inn of Court.
On January 7, 2019, Judge Smith was appointed to the Second District Court of Appeal and began serving as a member of the court on February 1, 2019. Also in 2019, she was awarded the fairness and diversity award by the Tenth Judicial Circuit's Fairness & Diversity Committee. Judge Smith served as chair and vice chair on the Florida Supreme Court Standing Committee on Fairness & Diversity, as President of the Willson American Inn of Court, and as a member of the Florida Supreme Court's Workgroup on Sanctions for Vexatious and Sham Litigation. She coauthored the Jury Instructions chapter of the Florida Eminent Domain Practice and Procedure (10th, 11th, and 12th Eds.).
