Judge John Guard received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and History from the Florida State University. He earned his Juris Doctor, summa cum laude, from Tulane University School of Law, where he served as a notes and comments editor for the Tulane Law Review.
Following law school, Judge Guard went into private practice at Holland & Knight LLP. At Holland & Knight LLP, his practice focused on commercial litigation. He later clerked for Judge James S. Moody, Jr., at the United States District Court for the Middle District of Florida. After clerking, he returned to private practice at Holland & Knight LLP. At Holland & Knight LLP, his practice focused on commercial litigation, intellectual property litigation, and bankruptcy litigation. In 2009, Judge Guard left private practice and became a federal prosecutor in Jacksonville, Florida. As a federal prosecutor, Judge Guard prosecuted a wide range of federal crimes focusing primarily on healthcare fraud, mail fraud, and wire fraud matters. In 2012, Judge Guard returned to private practice as a partner in the law firm of Quarles & Brady LLP. At Quarles & Brady LLP, Judge Guard’s practice focused on commercial litigation, trust litigation, and government investigations.
In January 2019, then Attorney General Moody named Judge Guard as Chief Deputy Attorney General. Judge Guard served in that role for a total of six and a half years. In that role, he was responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Department of Legal Affairs, including the litigation of the Department’s over 400 lawyers. As part of his responsibilities, Judge Guard led the litigation and settlement of the State’s opioid related litigation, recovering more than $3.5 billion for the State of Florida. In January 2025, Judge Guard served as Acting Attorney General of the State of Florida when Attorney General Moody became United States Senator Moody. In February 2025, Attorney General Uthmeier named Judge Guard Chief Deputy Attorney General again and later Senior Counselor to the Attorney General.
